This biography, which includes 25 chapters over 503 pages, is written by a relative of the most famous of these millions of working women – Hannah Cullwick. Born in 1833 in a small Shropshire town, raised in poverty, she began in service at the age of 8 and remained in service until she married aged 39. She then married her soulmate and they were married for 36 years until her death. A typical life for a working woman in Victorian years?
No!! It was an extraordinary and very eventful life that fulfilled most of her dreams and aspirations.
About The Author
John Cullwick is a relative of the most famous maid of all work and published diarist Hannah Cullwick – and has researched this biography for over 30 years. John was brought up in Wolverhampton, educated at Wolverhampton Grammar School and the University College of North Wales in Bangor. He attained a B.A. in Economics and Social Theory in 1969 and was employed within the retail industry for most of his career by Tesco and Budgens. He was an Area Manager for Tesco based in Mold in the 1970’s where he met his wife.
John is a Welsh-speaker, has lived in the beautiful Rhondda Fawr valley of south Wales since 2007 and was elected County Councillor for his village of Pen-y-graig in 2017.
